Report from Dewayne and Rita Shappley

For the month of October, 2014

Another sermon for the West Broward, Spanish-speaking, church of Christ, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Sunday, Oct. 5, 2014.

This picture of a great spiral galaxy illustrates a part of the Shappley Report for October, 2014, having to do with the sermon in Spanish The God of All Things Are Possible.

This is the title slide for the sermon described below.

Arriving at our son’s house in Coral Springs, FL on Oct. 3rd, I was informed that Ulbert Romero, preacher for the West Broward congregation, was very sick with a virus and was asked if I could prepare a sermon for the Oct. 5th service. Accepting the invitation, I spent about twelve hours on Saturday, Oct. 4th, preparing a fifteen slide PowerPoint lesson on the subject “Understanding and Appreciating the God of: All things are possible… nothing is impossible”–in Spanish: “Comprendiendo y apreciando al Dios de Todas las cosas son posibles… no hay nada imposible.” Before the invitation to speak came, I had already been giving some thought to the points developed during the presentation, and proceeded to prepare them rather rapidly in the slide format, using a number of pertinent photographs, other graphics, data and Bible texts.

Both the angel Gabriel, in his comments to Mary about Elizabeth conceiving in her old age, and Jesus Christ, in his statements about how difficult it is for the rich to be saved, affirm that all things are possible for God, nothing is impossible. Selecting, in the New Testament, some tremendous actions God is said to do, or will do, comparisons were made to some amazing things man is capable of doing in this Digital Age. For example, the astonishing amount of data God accumulates, or can accumulate, as he registers all the words and actions by which all human beings of all times and places will be judged. A challenge is made to atheists, skeptics and doubters of every kind to consider how even imperfect, limited and slow human beings process, in just one day, with all the computers in the world, absolutely enormous amounts of data.

To be sure, my own understanding and appreciation of God grew even more as I pondered the subjects and prepared the lesson. Numerous favorable comments would indicate that many who were present for the message were also benefited. All the glory to that Supreme Being who created all the elements and sciences that make possible the digital world in full development today. Men only discover what the Original Engineer of the Universe created and set in motion; they invent, but do not create.

After improving somewhat a few of the slides, all were made available as a PowerPoint Presentation on the Internet. The PDF (Portable Document File) version can be accessed through a carrousel of images in the document at www.editoriallapaz.org/sermon-dios-digital.html. Then I composed the entire text for the sermon, making it available on the Internet, together with smaller versions of the images (slides). The document is at www.editoriallapaz.org/sermon-dios-digital-texto.html. Needless to say, these tasks required quite a number of hours. Thus, the message, both evangelistic and expository in nature, preached originally to about 60 people, can be seen and read by those going on the site editoriallapaz –more than 4,000 daily as of this writing.

E-mails and Notes reveal much about the material on our sites and positive reactions to it.

-Place not identified. Oct. 02, 2014. Excellent. May God fill your lives with peace and joy. Amen!” Jesús (This name is pronounced with emphasis on the second syllable. Though in English we would never think of naming a son “Jesus,” it is a very common name in the Spanish-speaking world, as are other religious names such as “Salvador.”) Referer: "http://www.editoriallapaz.org/iglesia_orden_culto_clases.htm"

-The Referer is to a study clarifying differences between a worship service and Bible classes. Not a few in our brotherhood conceive of classes as being a continuation of worship, and, logically for them, forbid women to speak in classes.

-Fort Lauderdable, Florida. West Broward Church of Christ, Spanish-Speaking. Oct. 05, 2014. Sis. Doris, of this congregation, told us she often uses material from our site for her own edification and also for Bible classes she teachers. One Wednesday night when I was teaching a class at West Broward, a person present asked a question about spiritual gifts which was not exactly related to the main subject and would have required much time to answer. I opted to suggest that extensive explanations could be found on editoriallapaz. Then asked how many knew how to go on the site and quickly find answers to questions or material on a given subject. Only three or four had been on the site and I think only Doris really knew how to use it. Again, she stated how valuable it was to her and that she often recommended it to others. Incidentally, the best and fastest way to find any subject on the site is to use the internal Google Search feature for the site. Entering a key word such as “Baptism” will immediately bring up a list of materials on the site related to that subject.

-Place not identified. Oct. 05, 2014. “Hoping the grace of God and the virtue of the Holy Spirit may be with you, I salute you in the love of Christ my Savior, and yours. Also desiring blessings and prosperity for you in this ministry God, by his grace, has given you, as a blessing for all those who are in great need of the blessed word of God. Your brother in Christ Jesus. Licenciado Ricardo Valenzuela, Evangelical Pastor.” Referer: "http://www.editoriallapaz.org/Hechos_McGarvey_20_13_a_21_16.htm"

-In Mexico and Central America, “Licenciado” usually is the title given a lawyer, though in these areas as well as in the rest of the Spanish-speaking world it may identify a personal who has qualified to exercise his profession, for example, a pharmacist. The Referer is to a portion of the commentary by J. W. McGarvey on Acts.

-Dominican Republic. Oct. 11, 2014. “I have always used material [from you]. I would like to know if I can use images on your Web page for some biblical electronic books [I am considering publishing] in an independent, professional way.” Porfirio Córdoba

-Place not identified. Oct. 13, 2014. “Many thanks for responding in such a friendly and complete way.” Viviana Frydman

-Colombia. Oct. 13, 2014. “I am totally grateful to you for what you have set forth in these lines. I have no doubts about God being the Architect of the physical universe as well as the invisible universe. Many thanks for sending me this information, which I will share with brethren and some unconverted.” Alberto López Torres

-Judging from the context, I think Alberto has reference to the sermon “All things are possible for God; nothing is impossible.”

-Place not identified. Oct. 14, 2014. “Good afternoon, brother. I am very thankful for the effort you make to carry on such a great work.” Francisco Salazar

-Miami, Florida. Oct. 18, 2014. “Very good instruction. I learned a lot. It is an answer from God. I searched and came to this Web site that clarified much for me and answered many questions I had asked my beloved Redeemer in my prayers.” Zobeida Álvarez. Referer: "http://www.editoriallapaz.org/estudios-biblicos-edificando-sobre-el-fundamento-estudio-4.html"

-The Referer is to a set of four detailed studies on 1 Corinthians 3:5-15. “Gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay and stubble in the church.”

-Zacatecas, México. Oct. 20, 2014. “I have just discovered this Web site and, having explored it, find it pleasing. God bless you for your work in this ministry.” Gustavo Martínez Arellano  Referer: "http://www.editoriallapaz.org/tipos_Israel_2_cruzamarRojo.htm"

-This comment was written from the Page which presents an image (slide) of the “Baptism of the Israelites in the Red Sea,” one of a series on the subject: “These Things Happened for our Example.”

-Monagas, Venezuela. Oct. 25, 2014. “Good information for the formation of faithful and capable leaders who will be able to teach others, and for the ministry of Christian education.” Elith Devera   Referer: "http://www.editoriallapaz.org/"

-The Referer points to the whole site of Editorial La Paz. As we have often pointed out, there are three full courses on the site for leadership training, plus no small amount of additional pertinent material.

-Place not identified. Oct. 26, 2014. Excellent. I am in agreement with the information given. I take this opportunity to request orientation about women being pastors and teachers of the Word, seeing that the same Word prohibits them from being so. Many thanks, and may the Lord continue blessing you.” Salvador González Referer: "http://www.editoriallapaz.org/diezmos_pastores_son_sacerdotes.htm"

-The Referer points to the study: “Los pastores somos ‘los sacerdotes’ de la iglesia de Cristo", argumenta el pastor Javier, afirmando que los diezmos son absolutamente necesarios.” –“We Pastors are the Priests of the Church of Christ,  Argues Pastor Javier, Affirming that Tithes are Absolutely Necessary.” Our reply was rather lengthy. Pastor Javier’s reference to “Priests” is to the levitical priests under the law of Moses.

-Place not identified. Oct. 31, 2014. Good, but really very good, for your answer is based on truth, and there is nothing better than truth. For that reason, Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and the life. Very good, brother, your answer to Sis. Iliana.” Your servant, with love in Christ, José C. Jiménez  Referer: "http://www.editoriallapaz.org/leyes_Ilia_2.htm"

-The Referer is to a series of extensive exchanges with a woman from a family of the church of Christ in Puerto Rico who married a Sabbath keeper. They moved to the US where she joined him in his religion, then tried by every argument and sophistry possible to prove that the ten commandments are not referred to in 2 Corinthians 3:6-17, even trying to use the Greek text in her lengthy expositions. When she began to assert that grammar did not matter because the original text was written is this or that way, it became fully evident her fanaticism was blinding her completely, and there the dialogue ended. Now, I am glad to know José Jiménez read it and appreciates the truth of our explanation and defense.

-Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, Mexico. Panamerican Highway, Barrio Lieza. Oct. 29, 2014. “I want to contact you for I need a place to meet, but there is no church nearby. I am studying with some family members, a total of six people, but really feel the need to be strengthened by other brethren. All the churches here are of the tithing kind, with the exception of the Jehovah’s Witnesses. I will have to visit them if I do not receive an answer from you. I hope to count on your understanding and help.” Ángel Reyna Díaz

-I forwarded this information by e-mail to contacts in the Directory for Mexico maintained on our site. Bro. Isidoro Arellano Méndez responded, informing us that a church of Christ does meet in Tehuantepec, and another not too far away in San Francisco Oyozontle, Veracruz. We did not have data on the one in Tehuantepec. Isidoro made contact with Ángel Reyna Díaz. Ángel is using material on our site to teach his family members. He says they have been Pentecostals and that he is having trouble convincing them of sound doctrine. I assume he himself had been Pentecostal since he did not know about the church of Christ in his town. We await news as to the outcome of these contacts.

In the digital age, we have not left God behind, is one of the slides for the sermon: The God of All Things Are Possible, in the Shappley Report for October, 2014.

Another slide for the sermon “The God of All Things Are Possible.” In this one, we emphasize that, even with all the knowledge accumulated in this Digital Age and the computational power of all the computers in the world, we have not left God behind!
